Heather Saville – Friends in deed: Are we helping the people who need help most?

Do we do any good? How could we do it better? These are questions raised in Heather Saville’s book, Friends in deed, about Quaker Service Australia (QSA). Formerly Chair of QSA, Heather will discuss successes and challenges in QSA’s development experience over 50 years, including small-scale agriculture and food and water security in South East Asia and Africa.

Suzanne Baker – Beethoven and the zipper – the story of Musica Viva

Musica Viva, the largest entrepreneurial chamber music organisation worldwide, was founded post-war in Sydney by Viennese Jewish refugee, Richard Goldner, who made a fortune from zippers. Suzanne, Academy Award winner for her film, ‘Leisure’, sets Goldner’s memoirs in the context of Australia maturing, 1930 – 1970.

Rosemary Arnold – First females above Australia

Rosemary, Australia’s first woman helicopter, flew a Hughes 500 across the USA in 1969, founded the Helicopter Association Australia in 1977 and lectured at university level in aviation history. A marriage celebrant since 2004, her book of 100 short biographies salutes 100 years of Australia’s female flying firsts from 1909-2009, highlighting women flyers in a ‘boys club’ industry.

2012 Annual Lunch

Our next Annual Lunch will take place on Monday, 17 September 2012, in the Strangers’ Dining Room, Parliament House, Macquarie Street, Sydney.

We are proud to have as our Guest Speaker Professor Larissa Behrendt. Larissa is a Eualeyai and Kamillaroi woman. She is an academic and author, and is currently Professor of Law and Director of Research at the Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning at the University of Technology Sydney. In 2009, Larissa was named the NAIDOC Indigenous Person of the Year and in 2011 she was named NSW Australian of the Year.

Invitations to the lunch will be sent out during August and included in the Library’s Newsletter. Please contact the Library if you require additional invitations. We hope you and your friends will be able to join us at the lunch.
