From time to time, the Library holds a special event. These events will be publicised on the website, our Facebook page and in the newsletter.
In 2012 there were three special events. On 15 May, the Library hosted the launch by the Hon Julie Collins, Federal Minister for the Status of Women, of the Women’s Statement 2012 — Achievements and Budget Measures. Some 60 representatives of key national women’s organisations and major Sydney groups attended. It was an opportunity to discuss, network and view the Library and was a great success.
On 13 September, the Library presented a special lunch hour talk, Feminism and Fashion, as part of NSW History Week, the theme of which was Threads. Dr Beverley Kingston, well known historian, author and Library Board member, gave an entertaining and informative talk, looking at the ways changing fashions have intersected with feminism from the late 19th century. An edited version of the talk is in the November 2012 newsletter.
On 25 October, the Hon Tanya Plibersek, Federal Minister for Health and Library member, launched the book, Chinese Australian Women’s Stories, a joint Library and Chinese Heritage Association of Australia project at a festive dinner in Sydney. The Library hopes that this will be the first of a series of publications about immigrant women’s lives. The book is on sale for $15 at the Library.
In 2013, on 15 May a special tribute was held at the Library for Dr Una Gault, psychologist, feminist and a member of the Library. She was a founding member of the Australian Psychologist Society and the Women and Psychology group. A report on the tribute is in the July 2013 newsletter.
On 7 April 2015 the Library co-hosted with Emily’s List a tribute to the life of Joan Kirner, the first woman Premier of Victoria, and her contribution to equity in Australian public education. The function was hosted by the Hon Helen Westwood from EMILY’s List and Jozefa Sobski, Chair of the Library Board.
Lyndsay Connors AM was the guest speaker. She spoke about the commitment she shared with Joan Kirner to public education, beginning with their work with Parents and Citizen’s Associations and clubs, one in the ACT and the other in Victoria and then with the Australian Schools Commission. On 27 September 2018 the Library, in partnership with the Women Lawyers Association of NSW, held an event at the Union, University and Schools Club, Sydney to celebrate 100 years since the passing of the Women’s Legal Status Act (NSW) 1918. A report on the event is in the November 2018 newsletter.
